Bug Ruud!

Ruud brought lots of really interesting creatures for us to see.

Spiders
We looked at Tunnel Web, Nursery Web and very rare Katipo Spiders:

An Alexander Beetle
This is a native ground beetle found in gardens, urban areas, agricultural areas, native forests and exotic forest in Canterbury, New Zealand. They love to eat lots of different insects and bugs and slugs!

Katidid
The large leaf shaped katydid like to hide in bushes pretending to be a leaf.
They love eating leaves and flowers. They are quite common in urban areas and in summer-autumn the "tsssk" calls are often heard. These bright green (sometimes pink when immature) katydids fly well and are active in the daytime. Watch this one go for a spin in our video!

 Preying Mantis
These are bright green and like to hide in trees and bushes. They love to eat other bugs.

Weta
Ruud brought delightful Dorothy in to see us. She is magnificent. She likes to eat fruit and vegetables and dead bugs. She is great at cleaning up things lying around decomposing. She was super friendly - check out the videos of  her exploring humans!

Dorothy liked hiding up sleeves!
Some of us were a bit wary!
But we soon realised the creatures were gentle and friendly.
