Playing with Number

Mathematics is an important part of our play programme at Halswell.  Teachers set up drama based play activities for the children, to engage them in number and grow a love of maths.  This week we focussed on The Currant Bun Shop. The children then explored the idea of take away, counting to 5, making groups of 5 and beyond.  They embraced the idea of running a shop, so then we needed a bank to give out the money.  Children were able to expand their shops to practice their counting at a higher level.  We all enjoyed shopping at the Ahuriri Mall!
